Microsoft may be trying to stop the sale of the MSI Wind U115

in Netbooks

MSI Wind U116MSI had a brilliant idea for its U115 netbook – instead of installing Windows XP on a large hard drive and also using that drive for storage, why not use hybrid storage?  They kept the Windows XP operating system on a separate solid state drive, which is a bit more speedy, and left a large hard drive for applications and storage.  What makes this separation great is that the hard drive can be turned off, making the U115’s battery last much longer.

Unfortunately, Microsoft does not seem to like this idea and may be trying to stop the sale of the netbook completely. Why?  Microsoft doesn’t seem to want Windows XP running on devices that use hybrid storage.  I’ve been racking my brain trying to figure out a reason why this could be and, honestly, I have nothing.  MSI has a great product here, one that actually makes Microsoft’s product run better, and Microsoft doesn’t like it?  I’m baffled.

The folks at Microsoft can’t seem to stop shooting themselves in the foot.  Every bit of positive press they receive is quickly counteracted by something negative and nonsensical, and this is just one more example.  Windows XP has an expiration date, though unknown, thanks to the upcoming Windows 7 operating system (which will run on netbooks).  If I were in Microsoft’s shoes, I would try to squeeze every last penny that I could out of XP before everyone moves on to 7 – but that would make too much sense, wouldn’t it?
